Permanent Secretary Inaugurates Ministerial Codex Committee for Livestock

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, has inaugurated the Ministerial Codex Committee (MCC) of the Ministry, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening food safety systems, promoting public health, and enhancing Nigeria’s participation in international food trade.

The inauguration which held on Wednesday 15th October 2025, at the Ministry's headquarters, reiterates Nigeria’s efforts to align national food control systems with global Codex Alimentarius standards jointly established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In her address, the Permanent Secretary noted that the formation of the MCC was both strategic and timely, as it will ensure the Ministry’s effective coordination and representation in national and international Codex deliberations.

She lauded the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and development partners such as the FAO and WHO for their continued support in strengthening Nigeria’s Codex structures.

Dr. Akujobi further urged members to bring their technical expertise to bear, remain evidence-driven, and ensure Nigeria’s voice in Codex processes remains credible and well-coordinated.

Earlier, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Musa Mohammed Inuwa, represented by the Director of Public Health and Epidemiology, Dr. Samuel Anzaku, in his welcome address, described the establishment of the MCC as a major milestone towards ensuring that livestock and animal-derived products in Nigeria conform to international safety and trade standards.

The Committee is tasked with reviewing draft standards, harmonising technical positions, and strengthening inter-departmental collaboration to promote safe, high-quality animal-derived food products.
