FG Strengthens Capacity for Livestock Methane Emissions Monitoring through Enumerators’ Training
A two-day training for enumerators on livestock methane emissions monitoring commenced on Monday, 15th December 2025, in Abuja, as part of Nigeria’s efforts to establish credible, country-specific data for climate action and sustainable livestock development.
The training featured technical sessions led by Sustainability Analyst, Mr. Joshua Omozoje, who introduced participants to the Netzence Close Carbon Technology, and Mr. Joshua Fiafiadumo Edward, who delivered a detailed presentation on field data integrity, confidentiality, and compliance protocols.
Mr. Omozoje explained the importance of methane monitoring in the livestock sector, noting that methane is a key greenhouse gas with significant implications for climate change mitigation.
He demonstrated how the Close Carbon Platform enables real-time measurement of livestock methane emissions using Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, which transmit secure, tamper-proof data directly from livestock clusters to a central digital registry.
The platform supports accurate greenhouse gas quantification, reporting, verification, and the generation of carbon reduction instruments, backed by transparent blockchain technology.
Participants were trained on defining emission boundaries, establishing baseline emissions, applying internationally accepted standards such as ISO 14064 and IPCC guidelines, and converting methane reductions into carbon dioxide equivalents.
The sessions highlighted how credible data will strengthen Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), unlock access to climate finance, and position the livestock sector to benefit from global carbon markets.
In a complementary session, Mr. Edward emphasized strict adherence to data ethics, confidentiality, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023. He stressed the importance of safeguarding national strategic data assets and ensuring informed consent in the collection of personal and farm-level information.
The training underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to evidence-based policy, climate accountability, and sustainable growth of Nigeria’s livestock sector.
